"Searches
Made Simple"
Here are some great tips to help you get more
of your searches on-line.
1. Narrow your search. Use the minus sign when
you don't want a topic included in the search
results. (i.e. type in San Francisco Tourism
- art to find non-art museum attractions). Be
sure to include a space before the minus sign.
2. Use multiple search terms to increase the
likely hood of getting exactly what you're looking
for. (i.e. instead of typing mechanic, type Colorado
Springs Honda mechanic.)
3. Use quotation marks to ensure your search
will locate the entire phrase. (i.e. "Leonid
Meteor Showers" so your search won't show
up any bathroom fixtures).
4. If you're looking for info from a specific
time frame, use tow periods to specify a range
of dates (i.e. 2000..2005). Check out waybackmachine.org to
find info that was once online but isn't any
longer.
5. The label "Sponsored Links" means
advertisers have paid for those results to be
displayed. That doesn't mean they aren't useful
though.
6. There is a fairly new web tool called Real
Simple Syndication (RSS) or news feeds, that
compiles information from various sites of your
choice on topics you specify. Just create a free
account on a service like Newsgator then
select your topics of interest. The service will
customize a web page with links to regularly
updated information on those subjects.
7. If you're not sure of a words spelling, use
a tilde in your search term (i.e. for microdermabrasion
sites type in microderm~)
Hope this helps you find what you're looking
for on-line! Happy surfing!
